Into September with The Archive for Education.

30 Sep 2022

The world of education is constantly in motion. Whether it’s new educational objectives and key competences or digital leaps forward, our educational platform, The Archive for Education, ensures we keep our finger on the pulse and can contribute to innovation in various projects. Read more below to discover how we do it.

Expanded space for secondary education students sees the light of day!

Two years ago, we introduced a space on our educational image database with watching and listening assignments for secondary education students. A further expansion this summer means students can now do their own searches for video and audio clips on The Archive for Education, and collate them into their own collections. This interactive method helps them to improve their online searching skills and digital competences. Furthermore, we have also simplified the student assignment form and improved the workspace, to help teachers use and follow up the new exercises more easily. But what exactly does this latest innovation make possible?

At the start of September, we also added new filter options so teachers and students can now search for lesson inspiration and audiovisual content in a more targeted way.

This expansion was made possible with support from VLAIO, the Flemish Agency for Innovation and Entrepreneurship. Download the report (link in Dutch) to learn more about the preliminary research.

Quick catch-up: what’s happening with the Digisprong initiative?

Digi-what? With Digisprong, Flanders is fully committed to the digitalisation of compulsory education, with funding also being provided for the continued development of The Archive for Education. Read more about the plans here.

Where are we?

  • Teachers and students will be able to use one central account with a single sign-on infrastructure to log in to various educational platforms, including The Archive for Education. Teachers can sign in with government identity keys such as itsme, and secondary school students can use LeerID. All data will of course remain secure within the Department of Education and Training in Flanders;

  • We will be rolling out the collaboration and knowledge-sharing section in spring 2023 – an expansion that will allow teachers to easily collaborate on collections and assignments, and share them with other users. Also on the agenda is the efficient creation of collections as learning resources, for example on KlasCement;

  • We are actively researching what new technologies and teaching methods can help to promote blended learning (link in Ducth). How about interactive video?

This continued development fits within the Digisprong initiative and the Flemish Government’s Resilience Recovery Plan (link in Dutch), and is being made possible with support from the Flemish Minister for Education, Ben Weyts, and the Flemish Department of Education and Training.
