Public Domain Day
The public domain is the collection of all creative works that are not subject to exclusive intellectual ownership rights. These rights might have expired, or been relinquished or explicitly declined by the author, or they might simply not be applicable. For example, works by painter James Ensor, writers Maurice Maeterlinck and Klaus Mann, designer and architect Aino Aalto, and composer Richard Strauss all entered the public domain this year. It’s ideal content for your open data policy, which facilitates its re-use.

We want to help, and we’ll soon be shining a spotlight on the public domain in Belgium. The aim is to ensure our shared heritage is and remains freely accessible.
We at PACKED/VIAA are joining forces with the Royal Library of Belgium to organise a special study day in Brussels on 21 February – in support of Public Domain Day.
