What to do with audio-visual carriers after digitisation?
Audio-visual carriers are vulnerable things. If they’re preserved under the right conditions, they can last a good while, but too hot or too cold, too dry or too wet and the carriers will degenerate more quickly. Furthermore, the playback devices for the outdated carriers are slowly disappearing.
That’s why we’re digitising audio and video from these carriers. But what is to happen to these carriers afterwards? Meemoo cannot answer that question on its own. That’s why we debated with our content partners, during conferences, by means of a brainstorm exercise together with FARO and online. The key question: to preserve or not to preserve and why? Claims to take into account include the conservation cost, the issue of how safe a digital copy is, the value of the carrier as an object and the possibility to digitise the carrier once again in the future.
Based on the many conversations, we developed a resolution framework that is at the same time cautious and realistic. With five well-defined questions, content partners can estimate if it’s useful to preserve their carriers. This resolution framework is yet to be assessed for its usability through one or more concrete examples. In 2015, an article was published about the research project, titled ‘What to do with audio-visual carriers after their digitisation? Proposal for a five-step decision making framework’. The article defines the first steps that are taken and proposes the resolution framework. The project was also presented at a seminar of FARO in 2015 and at the FIAT/IFTA-conference in Warsaw in October 2016.
