Summer Course for the Study of the Arts in Flanders ‘Medieval and Renaissance Sculpture’

This year, we are taking part in the coördination of the Summer Course for the Study of the Arts in Flanders. From 23 June until 3 July 2024, this Summer Course brings a select group of 18 young researchers to Flanders. During this intensive 11-day programme of lectures, discussions, and visits, they are immersed in medieval and renaissance sculpture. As a participant, this provides you with a clear insight into the Flemish art collections from the period at hand, as well as into the current state of research on the topic.

Programme

This sculptural road trip will take you to museums, archives, churches, research institutes and restoration studios, for a programme with guided visits, workshops, lectures and discussions with experts in the field. During this course, excursions will be made to Leuven, Antwerp, Brussels, Bruges, Mechelen, Breda, Rotterdam, Maastricht, Liège, Aachen, Geel, Zuurbemde, Zoutleeuw.

Who can apply?

To be eligible for this summer course, you have a master's degree or are PhD student, junior curator or restorer with a focus on medieval and/or renaissance sculpture. The master's degree was earned maximum 10 years ago.

Practical information

This course takes place from 23 June until 3 July 2024, and is held in English.

The participation fee of the Summer Course is fixed at €1302 (including VAT) per person. The fee includes the full 11-day programme, 10 overnight hotel stays in a single-occupancy room, all transportation within the programme, all entry tickets, two receptions, five lunches and five dinners. Not included in the participation fee is the transport to and from Belgium.

Please note that this is an intensive and physically strenuous course.

Grants


  • Thanks to the generous support of the Samuel H. Kress Foundation's History of Art Grants Program two US students and citizens are offered a grant that will fully cover the programme fee and round trip flights between Belgium and the US.

  • The organizers of the Summer Course have made available two grants as well. The recipients of the grant will pay a reduced participation fee of €651 (including VAT) instead of the regular fee.

In addition to a resume, a letter of motivation and a letter of recommendation, required for general applications, candidates for financial aid are also asked to send a statement explaining their financial need.
