Meemoo’s Digitisation & Acquisition Manager becomes FIAT/IFTA President

3 Nov 2020

At the FIAT/IFTA General Assembly on 27 October 2020, Brecht Declercq, meemoo’s Digitisation & Acquisition Manager, was elected to become the 11th President of the international organisation for media archives.

It’s the first time in FIAT/IFTA’s 44-year history that a Belgian has held this position. Brecht succeeds Bríd Dooley from Ireland, Head of Archives for the public service broadcaster RTÉ, who was President for four years. Brecht has long been a committed member of the organisation: he headed the FIAT/IFTA Preservation and Migration Commission from 2016 until 2019, and until recently acted as General Secretary of the Executive Council.

We are extremely proud as an organisation that our colleague is taking up this role in addition to his job at meemoo, and therefore contributing to the proper management of audiovisual media worldwide. Brecht, too, is very enthusiastic:

I am very honoured to be leading FIAT/IFTA for the next two years. Major efforts are still needed worldwide to safeguard our audiovisual heritage. At the same time, we also want these investments to benefit society as a whole as much as possible. FIAT/IFTA is helping media archives worldwide to meet this challenge. It’s a very dynamic, global network, which ensures a constant flow of inspiring ideas. This will help us, too, in Flanders to become familiar with the best ideas from abroad, while at the same time ensuring the rest of the world learns how we approach things in Flanders."

FIAT/IFTA (International Federation of Television Archives) is the international organisation for media archives. Together with over 250 members from all continents, it ensures the proper management of broadcaster and media collections.
