Teachers get on with Flemish video and audio

Audiovisueel archiefmateriaal vindt snel zijn weg naar de klas

On its second birthday, The Archive for Education, the image bank for Flemish education, has reached more than 46,000 users. That means the platform grew more than 75% compared to the end of 2016. The Archive for Education offers teachers a selection of video and audio content to use in the classroom. Those materials come from the archives of VIAA partners and contain VRT shows, the VTMNieuws and video and audio of regional broadcasters, as well as cultural and heritage institutions.

Nico Verplancke, director of VIAA, looks back on the past two years: “The platform owes its success primarily to the involvement of Flemish teachers. VIAA has, for instance, collaborated with teachers to create a basic content offered by The Archive for Education. Every teacher can make a suggestion for new content as well. In 2017 alone, we processed 1,000 requests for materials.”

With the support of the Department for Education, VIAA wants to provide teachers with an even better service. To continue expanding its content, VIAA is counting on durable partnerships within the educational field. The project Culture in the Mirror was set up together with CANON Cultuurcel, which gives concrete insights in cultural education. Together, they also investigated how students themselves can make videos with existing video content. Another recent collaboration is a pilot project with five educational publishers, who integrate audiovisual materials in their teaching methods. The usability of the platform should also be kept in mind. That is why VIAA works together with Smartschool and KlasCement to make the unique materials even more easily accessible for teachers. Minister for Education Hilde Crevits agrees:

It’s no surprise that The Archive for Education has taken such a flight: we are living in a culture of images. VIAA enables teachers to easily work with video and audio in the classroom. An accessible and adapted platform clearly makes a difference for teachers.
